Will You Escape the "Sick Care" System?
Will You Escape the "Sick Care" System?
The Obama administration is in the midst of reconstructing the American health care landscape. The major reasons for the reconstruction are that 1) we have the most expensive health care system in the world (with some of the worst results), and 2) there are approximately 47 million Americans who have no coverage.
Being in the health care field as a doctor of chiropractic, I have to ask a simple question that seems to be overlooked in the middle of the turf wars, campaigning and rhetoric: Will we be healthier with a new system?
The answer is that we don't know because no one is talking about that. We have everyone from grassroots organizations all the way up to the Senate and Congress talking about a new health care system, but it is focused on the cost of the system while it should be about our health.
Yes, we do have the most expensive sick care system in the world. This is a major Catch-22 for America… that to be in our health care system you have to be sick. So the first question has to be: Who is going to pay for this new system? We are fighting two wars, along with administering a Medicare prescription pill plan that we cannot cover. Where is the money going to come from? If it is from you and me, then how does it become a better system? Higher taxes? That is what other countries have had to do to cover a national program; are we ready for that? Should employers take on the burden? Talk about a non-stimulus package.
I understand that 47 million Americans do not have coverage, and yes, there should be a safety net for them. But are we saying that we think those 47 million are going to be healthier because they have insurance? Are we forgetting that they will join the 253 million Americans who do have coverage and are not even close to being the healthiest in the world? We already have the best doctors, hospitals, best technology, easiest access to care and an abundant information network for those 253 million Americans, and we want more people to join that group?
We don't need a new health care system. We need healthier Americans! And, that cannot be legislated by any decree or proclamation. It can only be done when Americans start taking responsibility for themselves and their own health. At a time when we are being slowly suffocated by taxes, payments, bailouts and hidden charges, the best thing you could invest in is your own health. It is the only investment at this time that can guarantee a positive return now and in the future.
When we are listening to the barrage of point-counterpoint views on universal health care, take a keen notice of how many times you do NOT hear the word "health" being discussed. "Prevention" is tossed around from time to time, but there are no concrete ideas being brought forward as to how this will be delivered. So are we going from a “sick care system” to a universal sick care system? It seems so.
Remember, your health is ultimately dependent on you - not the insurance company. If we want more for ourselves, we must do more for ourselves. There is no better way!
We are happy and proud to be a place where you can go to make your escape from the sick care system. By restoring and actively maintaining your health you are making a difference in your future. We at Maximized Health salute you!
