Here are the Top 5 Things we need to be doing on a daily basis… in addition to chiropractic care and home care stretching:
- Hydration: The general rule is to consume half our body weight in ounces per day (if you weigh 180lbs you need 90 oz. of water). After an accident or injury we need to be fully hydrated throughout the day in order to heal properly and efficiently!
- Electrolytes: After a car accident our body is in a tense state, which affects our nervous system. Electrolytes help our nervous system regulate and coordinate the entire healing process. Electrolytes are essential for the healing process and will aid in the relief of headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, and sleep issues. Use an electrolyte supplement daily. (Ask a provider for a recommended brand)
- Ice: Cryotherapy is shown to be quite useful in managing inflammation for about 2-3 days post-accident. Ice should be applied for 10-15 minutes until the area goes numb before removing. Use multiple times per day or as needed.
- Heat: Useful 3+ days post-accident. Heat helps promote blood flow and healing. Heat should be used 15 minutes at a time. Use multiple times per day or as needed.
- Rest: Limit physical activity and get more sleep after a car accident to allow the body to start healing. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity will inhibit or impair the healing process. Check in with your health professional (chiropractor) to be cleared before engaging in any strenuous activity.
The best doctors are not the ones that merely treat our symptoms, but the ones that teach us how to naturally maximize health, healing, and longevity.
