THE TALE OF TWO SISTERS… Continued
Below is another important lesson Mary picked up long ago that changed her forever. In typical fashion, it came from a person she refers to as her health “mentor”. This lesson has the power to change lives. Please read it, and share it.
One day long ago…
Mentor: Question for you today Mary… how would you define health?
Mary: I guess I would say health is feeling good, feeling full of energy, not having any issues to complain about, and… ummm (long pause)
Mentor: Okay, that is what most people say. What if I told you that is a very incomplete, and in fact, very dangerous way to define health?
Mary: I would say… tell me what the right answer is. (laughter)
Mentor: I will, but before I do that, let me quickly explain why that definition is so incomplete and dangerous. Do you know how many people FEEL happy and healthy, but end up with cancer or heart disease? It happens everyday, and to a lot of people. My point is, just because a person FEELS healthy doesn’t mean they are healthy. In fact, cancer and heart disease can silently develop over several years before people start feeling anything at all. That’s why 5 out of 6 people will develop heart disease or cancer in their lifetime. So, there has to be a better way to define health than just going by how you FEEL, right?
Mary: When you put it like that – I should hope so!
Mentor: That’s why so many people are sick nowadays. They have never been taught how to define health, and therefore approach it properly. If it’s okay with you, let’s talk a little more about this while we get you adjusted today, okay?
Mary: Sounds good to me Doc.
Mentor: Let me ask you a question… Do you think it’s easier to maintain your health than it is to regain it once it’s been lost?
Mary: My father always said it’s easier, and less expensive, to maintain your car than it is to repair it once it breaks down.
Mentor: Great analogy. Can you see how that might apply to the current state of our health care system?
Mary: I guess so. The system seems to cater more to the breakdown mentality than to the maintenance mentality. When I say that, I think of my sister and people like her.
Mentor: You are right, it is a flawed and failing system. But, I think it’s failure serves a purpose. Maybe we needed to see what happens when we fail to understand health and lose focus on what’s really important?
Mary: I think I see where you are going with this. We are taught to go to the doctor when we feel bad so we can feel better again. But, we never really learn what caused the problem in the first place. Therefore, we never learn how to change our thinking or our behavior. We just keep repeating the same mistake over and over again.
Mentor: Precisely! I understand we all want to feel great, but there is a right way and a wrong way to going about it. It all starts with how you define health. Get it right, and you will live very well. Get it wrong, and you will end up like everyone else… heart disease, cancer or both.
Mary: Okay, so how do you define health Doc?
Mentor: I was hoping you would ask. The best definition of health from the World Health Organization is this… health is optimal function, a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of symptoms or disease. Long ago, I was taught that if I focused on improving function in my body, I could better control how I feel. That made a lot of sense to me. Since then, that is what I focus on daily, the chiropractic F-word… FUNCTION. My entire lifestyle revolves around function. How I eat, sleep, stand, sit, think, supplement, exercise, etc. That is why I still go and get adjusted myself, even when I feel fine!
Mary: Basically, most people are missing the boat by only focusing on, or defining health, by how they feel?
Mentor: Exactly! Again, health is optimal function physically, chemically, emotionally, and not merely the absence of symptoms or disease.
Mary: So, you are saying that if a person can focus on function, they will subsequently feel better as a result? Basically that is how you get to have your cake and eat it too?
Mentor: Yes! Now you are getting it!
Mary: That’s what I like about our conversations. I always learn to look at things differently. Like I said before, you are the only doctor I know that talks about stuff like this.
Mentor: I know. Imagine how different the world would be if more doctors were having discussions like this with their patients.
Mary: (sigh) Again, I can’t help but think of my sister, Jen. She seems to be in a downward spiral. She has all these doctors appointments, takes all these medications, and none of it seems to be making a difference at all.
Mentor: She probably isn’t being coached to focus on cause versus effect, function and lifestyle like you are. She needs to change her ways, like you did, before it’s too late!
Mary: I keep telling her that, and just when I think I am getting to her, she falls back into her old ways.
Mentor: I know how that goes. I have conversations like this all day long with so many people. They seem to agree with me at first, but as soon as they start feeling fine again, they lose focus and go right back to their old ways.
Mary: You must get really frustrated with people.
Mentor: It can be frustrating. But people like you, the ones that really get it and appreciate it, are the ones that keep me going. People like you keep me excited about what we are doing for people here. Speaking of which, let’s make sure you got this. Pop quiz Mary, what controls most of the functions in your body?
Mary: My nervous system, which includes the spinal cord that runs through my spine, which is why I come see you. You ask me that like every visit Doc.
Mentor: I know. I know. It’s just such an important thing to know and appreciate, I want to make sure you never forget it. I also want to make sure you learn to appreciate it for what it really is. Remember this, your nervous system is your body’s operating system. It regulates function from head to toe, thus it regulates your health. With that being said, here is the takeaway for today… when defining health, you have to consider how well the operating system is controlling bodily function. If it is doing it well, you will be in good shape. If it is doing it poorly, your health will surely be compromised – which CAN happen without you even feeling it!
Mary: I never heard you say it like that before, but that makes sense.
Mentor: You could rework the definition to say, health is optimal nervous system FUNCTION.
Mary: So, if I just come see you, get my spine and nervous system “tuned-up”… I will be fine, right?
Mentor: (laughter) Although that may be a big part of the picture, it’s not that simple Mary. I want you to leave this conversation thinking this… in addition to getting chiropractic adjustments, how many other ways can you improve your lifestyle to improve how your nervous system functions.
Mary: I think I am starting to put it all together. But, how do I know what increases or decreases nervous system function? I might know how to define health and function, but how do I know if I am doing enough? There must be a lot to it, right?
Mentor: That is an awesome question! I am working on a simple checklist you can use to measure how you are doing in this area of life. It will take a lot of the hard work and guess work out it for you. I’ll share that with you on your next visit, okay?
Mary: You are awesome Doc. Thanks for doing what you do.
Mentor: You are welcome Mary. Hey, two more things… First, keep forwarding those emails and sharing these conversations with others, especially your sister. Second, your kids are due for a checkup. I saw your husband yesterday for his regular visit, and mentioned that to him as well. I know they may be feeling good, but we need to make sure their bodies are functioning properly as well, okay?
Mary: Already planned on doing that on my way out today.
Mentor: Of course you did. I am going to start calling you Super Mom.
Mary: (giggle) Shhh, don’t blow my cover Doc.
Mentor: See ya in two weeks Mary.
